The Scientific Drying Process for Indoor Basketball Court Wood Flooring

Before any piece of wood can be used for indoor basketball court wood flooring, it must go through a rigorous, multi-stage drying process that is far more precise than the drying used for regular residential wood flooring. The process starts with freshly harvested wood, which contains a very high percentage of natural moisture straight from the forest. If this raw wood was cut into planks and installed directly on a basketball court, it would lose moisture as it acclimates to the indoor environment, shrinking dramatically and forming wide, uneven gaps between planks. That is why the first step of drying takes place in large, temperature-controlled kilns, where the temperature and humidity levels are adjusted very slowly over several weeks, to draw out excess moisture without cracking or warping the wood.

After the initial kiln drying stage, the wood is moved to a controlled acclimation space that matches the exact humidity and temperature conditions of the future basketball venue. The planks are stacked with small spacers between each layer, allowing air to circulate around every single piece of wood for several more weeks. During this period, the moisture content of the wood is tested every few days, until it reaches a level that is perfectly balanced with the average year-round humidity of the venue. This step is absolutely critical, because wood that is dried to a moisture level that is too low for the local environment will absorb moisture from the air in humid months, swelling up and creating raised, warped areas across the court. Wood that is too moist will shrink and crack as it dries out after installation, creating dangerous uneven spots.

The final stage of the drying process involves individual testing for every single plank. Workers use specialized moisture meters to check multiple points on each piece of wood, rejecting any planks that have inconsistent moisture levels across their surface. This strict quality check ensures that every plank that makes it to the installation site has a perfectly uniform internal moisture distribution. When these carefully dried planks are finally installed on the court, they will move very slightly with seasonal humidity changes, but the movement will be small, predictable, and evenly distributed across the entire floor. This eliminates almost all of the major warping, gapping, and cracking issues that can ruin a basketball court, ensuring that the playing surface remains smooth, flat, and safe for decades of use.
