A demountable sports wood floor is a significant investment, and proper maintenance is the key to getting the most out of it. The good news is that these floors are designed to be durable and relatively easy to maintain. The bad news is that neglecting maintenance can lead to premature wear, performance degradation, and costly repairs.
The most basic maintenance task is daily cleaning. After every use, the court should be swept or dust-mopped to remove dirt, dust, and sweat. These contaminants act like sandpaper on the finish, gradually wearing it down. A microfiber mop with a sports floor cleaner is ideal for this task. Avoid using water-based cleaners in excess, as too much moisture can seep into the seams and damage the wood.
Weekly maintenance should include a more thorough cleaning with a pH-neutral sports floor cleaner. This cleaner is specifically formulated for wood sports floors and will not damage the finish. Apply the cleaner with a mop, scrub lightly if necessary, and then wipe up the residue with a clean, dry mop. Do not let the cleaner sit on the floor for an extended period.
Monthly maintenance should include a visual inspection of the entire court. Look for any scratches, scuffs, or areas where the finish is wearing thin. Check the seams between panels for any gaps or lifting. In a demountable system, if a panel is lifting, it can usually be reseated without any tools. If the finish is worn in a specific area, a spot refinish can be applied without sanding the entire court.
Every one to two years, depending on the level of use, the floor should be refinished. This involves sanding the entire playing surface to remove the old finish and any surface damage, then applying a new coat of sports-grade finish. The refinishing process typically takes two to three days, during which the court is unusable. This is one of the advantages of demountable systems: because the panels can be removed, you can refinish them off-site if needed, reducing the downtime for the facility.
One of the unique maintenance advantages of demountable floors is the ability to replace individual panels. If a panel is severely damaged, you do not need to refinish the entire court. You simply unclip the damaged panel, slide in a new one, and reconnect it. This is not possible with fixed floors, where a damaged section often requires cutting out and replacing a large area of boards.
Humidity control is also a critical part of maintenance. Wood floors expand and contract with changes in humidity. The ideal relative humidity for an indoor basketball court is between 40 and 60 percent. If the humidity is too high, the wood will swell and the panels may buckle. If it is too low, the wood will shrink and gaps may appear between panels. A good HVAC system with humidity control is essential for any indoor sports facility with a wood floor.
Finally, never use abrasive cleaners, wax, or silicone-based products on a sports wood floor. These products can build up on the surface, making it slippery, or they can damage the finish. Stick to products specifically designed for sports wood floors, and follow the manufacturer's recommendations.
