The Subfloor Structure That Makes Indoor Basketball Court Wooden Flooring Perform at Its Best

Beneath the visible top layer of an indoor basketball court wooden flooring system lies a carefully engineered subfloor structure that is responsible for almost all of the floor's key performance characteristics. Many people only see the smooth, finished playing surface and do not realize that the majority of the work the floor does to protect players and support their movement happens in the layers hidden below the top wood planks. A typical high-performance subfloor system for a basketball court consists of multiple layers, each with a specific purpose that contributes to the overall functionality of the entire floor. At the very bottom, a moisture barrier is installed to prevent any moisture from the underlying concrete slab from seeping up into the wood, which could cause warping, swelling, or long-term damage to the flooring. Above that, a network of resilient pads or rubber cushions is placed, which are the primary components that create the shock-absorbing properties of the entire floor system. These pads are carefully spaced and selected to provide a consistent level of flexibility across every square foot of the court, so there are no soft spots or hard areas that could surprise players during a game. Even the highest quality top wood planks cannot perform correctly if they are installed over a poorly designed subfloor, which is why investing in a properly engineered lower structure is just as important as choosing the right top layer wood for any indoor basketball court.
